Trip length – are you going out for an overnighter or for a week or more.

Weekend (1–3 nights; 35–50 liters)

Efficient packers using newer, less-bulky gear can really keep things light on 1- to 3-night trips by using a pack in this range. fantastic use for weekend trips.

Multi-day (3–5 nights; 50–70 liters)

These are the most popular backpacking packs sold in India, and they’re an excellent choice for warm-weather trips lasting 3 or more days. 50–80 liter packs are also used for extended weekend trips. There would have more compartments to carrying accessories like binoculars, camera, ,map, Books, torch etc.

Extended-trip (5+ nights; 70 liters or larger)

Extended trips of 5 days or more usually call for packs of 70 liters or larger. These are also usually the preferred choice for:
Idea for adventurous trips like Himalayan tracking, North eastern state trip, western ghats trip, Winter treks lasting more than 1 night. Larger packs can more comfortably accommodate extra clothing, a warmer sleeping bag and a 4-season tent (which typically includes extra poles).

In India a backpack will always be smaller in size and a rucksack will be larger. However, both terms are often used interchangeably.

Features to look out while purchasing a Rucksack
1) Pockets and Compartments: Required for organizing and separating of contents
2) Heavy Duty Fabric for longer durability.
3) Airmesh Back System: It is a is a nylon or polyester net or mesh, with fibres underneath which “suspend” the mesh upwards. This allows airflow through the fabric.
4) Chest and Waist belts
5) Front Access Zipper: It is the most important feature to look for, a Rucksack should also have access from the front so that you can easily store or withdraw your content in the bottom of the Bag.
6) Compression Straps: To reduce the volume of the pack and to minimise movement of your contents.
7) Rain Cover: A rain cover is useful for covering your rucksack to stop the contents getting wet in the rain. If your rucksack doesn’t come with a rain cover you can buy one separately.
8) Fitting: Most of the Rucksacks come with an adjustable back strap to ensure comfort and security.
